Nesting: Not About the Stuff

When people say “It’s not about the stuff” they mean that the things in their homes are about the memories evoked by the things they see.

Wait, what about hoarders you say? It’s also not about the stuff – its about emotions and needs that the stuff cannot fulfill.

“It’s not about the stuff” can also mean that rather than receive material gifts, a person would rather have time to spend with a friend; or an activity to pursue with a family member; or a trip with grandchildren.

When you can’t find what you are looking for, it may be about the stuff, or it may be about a lack of organization. As thousands of personal organizers say “if you don’t use it, get rid of it. If you don’t love it, get rid of it. If you don’t have a happy memory about it, get rid of it.” And then they go on to say that the things you use every day should be close at hand. Things used infrequently should be further away, or even stored in a cabinet, closet or garage until the days you do use the items.

When it becomes “about the stuff” it is time to look internally to determine “why.” Why am I wanting this “stuff”? What is this stuff providing for me? What is the value of keeping all of this?

Two years ago, I began a multi-year spring cleaning of sorts. Letting go of items that were not in weekly use; items that we no longer needed; and items that held distant memories that no longer were helpful to daily life was an uplifting experience. After the first garage sale and donation run to the local thrift-shop, the house felt lighter. Clutter of space and memories had been cleared.

When you look around your home, what do you see? Stuff or Memories that serve you well?

Nesting is about the objects and experiences that create a sense of home. Without home, it is difficult to maintain health, find joy, or to be productive. Enjoy the Nesting series of blogs on your search for and creation of a deep sense of home. –Jana
